Connecticut Fishing Report 5/26/16

The first week of the spring run has been spectacular!

Black Sea Bass fishing has been off the charts with some porgies and fluke in the mix too!  Striped Bass catches have also been good. The biggest fish so far was in the 30lb class and we even tagged 3 fish for the ALS striped bass research program!

Connecticut’s charter fishing season starts in just 2 weeks!

Call Today!

Big post-spawn stripers are beginning to move out of Chesapeake Bay and could show up next week along the coast from New Jersey to Long Island. In the meantime, fresh schoolie stripers have been reported as far north as Plum Island, Massachusetts, and bigger bass are mixing in from Connecticut to Cape Cod.

The baitfish are in the Sound thick!   There are many reports of active stripers in the tidal rivers and New York Harbor already. We will be making some exploratory trips next week and will post our results.

  Here is a progress pic of repainting the main fishing deck.  Almost done!

Great news!

  The Connecticut Black Sea Bass season will now be opening on SUNDAY MAY 1st!  There will be a 15” minimum size and 8 fish bag limit for charter boats. This raises the quota 20% from last year! – This is an unbelievable opportunity to get out on the water soon and capitalize on one of the best eating fish in the sea!  –  We have never had a biomass of black sea bass this large before, nor have we had the sea bass season open this early. – Combine this with the warm water temps and the fact that the Sound is already teeming with life and we’ve got the makings for an unbelievable spring run!  –  We are officially starting our season on May 17th, but if you want to get out there early to target sea bass exclusively, just give us a call!

* New this year

We are official members of the striped bass tagging program!

Every year we release hundreds of striped bass back into the water alive and well. These fish are of various sizes that either didn’t meet the 28” minimum length requirement, we already hit our legal possession limit, or our customers were just practicing catch and release.  Now, instead of just letting them go; they will be weighed, measured, and tagged!  The next person who catches that fish; days, weeks, months or years later will also weigh and measure the fish. This is an invaluable tool that gives scientists and regulators information on the rate that these fish grow, their migration routes and spawning patterns to help keep the species healthy and sustainable.

March 24, 2016:
The spring striped bass season should definitely begin ahead of schedule this year.  There is already a very good striper bite taking place in both the small and large tidal rivers thanks to the mild winter.  Couple this in with the large schools of both peanut and adult bunker and you have all the makings of an awesome May!  Also of note, there are new black sea bass regulations this year which include a season opener on May 1 and running through December 31 in Connecticut waters. Be sure to call now and book your early trips ASAP as all signs are pointing towards a great spring run!
