Weekly Fishing Report 6/21/15

Here’s Erin Lawler  with her nice striper from an evening trip this week.

Hot!  Hot! Seabass action!

The seabass bonus season is now, (8 per man) so the time for a sea bass trip is NOW! Black seabass are plentiful along with a lot of LARGE scup. Limit’s all around.

The moon phase has been perfect, and the calendar’s right for some solid striped bass trips, but the truth is, they’re just not here.  The water temp is only 62 degrees and the water temp toward the bottom is much, much colder.  There is just not a lot of forage in the area for the striped bass to feed on.  Bluefish have also been scarce. We are into a lot of stripers that are sub legal (below 28”), but there’s still a bunch of fish in the 25lb -30lb class swimming around that we’ve been intercepting on their journey North.  Blues should arrive in great numbers by the week of the 4th. – Capt. Fishing Report – Week 3

Here’s regular customer Ray Simpson with a big ‘ol FAT bass from the other day.

– Week 3 into the season and we’re finally seeing some nice quality fish.    A lot of stripers in the 25lb -30lb class with several a touch below 40lb, so the quality is here, the quantity is still not.  The water temp dropped from 61F at the end of last week, to 53 this week because of the cold front.  Things warmed up yesterday and we’re back up to 57 now. There’s also been a bunch of smaller (short) stripers. –A good sign for the future and a sprinkling of bluefish hitting the deck as well.  Fluke numbers are still good with many fish over 20’’ taken this week with 24” being the largest again and we’re starting to get more and more porgies on each trip too.   New moon phase next week.  Fingers crossed. – Capt. TJ

Fishing Report- Week 2

Posted on June 2nd, 2015 by Captain TJ

Here’s a very excited John Racow and Doug Coulter after a last minute Hail Mary pass the other day.

– Week 2 into the season and we’ve seen much improvement. The trips are still seeing inconsistent catches with some trips being better than others, but more and more forage fish are starting to move into the area. The water temp peaked above 60 for a few times this week also. Fluke fishing seems to be fairly consistent with many fish over 20’’ taken this week with 24” being the largest. The current full moon phase should also really kick things into gear. Stay tuned. – Capt. TJJohn Racow

Here’s some nice stripers taken by the O’Connells!

One week into the season and the fishery is starting to improve.  Thankfully we’re starting to get more keeper stripers and even running into some bluefish!  Without a doubt the action is inconsistent with some trips being better than others, but still an improvement over the first few trips of the year.  It’s just a waiting game for the migration to move into our area now.

The 2015 season has officially started.

Here’s regular customer Mike Venghaus with the first keeper of the year!

The moon phase is right, the temp is right and the calendar is right, but the stripers and fluke just haven’t got that memo!

Our local fishery is poised and ready to go. The fish just haven’t migrated to us on their typical schedule,  it is that simple.

The winter holdover bass from the Housatonic are on their way and we are starting to catch a few of them, and the Connecticut River fish are around the mouth of the river feeding in the shallow flats. The fish are just not in our area in the numbers they usually are.

Some blame the cold winter, some blame the lack of rain,  but it’s probably a little bit of both.  They are just simply late. We are getting some fish….. but it is what it is, and it’s all up to mother nature right now. Across the Sound in the Long Island fishery, the fishing is good to great and they are also in numbers and in places a week or so behind where they should be.

Stay tuned. – Capt. TJ

Fishing Starts May 16th – Call Today!

The boat’s in the water and ready to go and we are very excited about this season.  Everything is looking perfect for our spring run.  Mother Nature has definitely been cooperating and this week is no exception with temps forecasted to be near 70 degrees.  The Housitonic and other holdover riviers are teeming with stripers and those fish will head into Long Island Sound soon. The water temps are currently right where they should be (52.5F at the dock right now) and there’s already bunker in our harbor and many others along the Connecticut shore.  If the temps pan out the way they say they’re going to I expect the Sound to hit the magic 50 degree mark by somewhere around May 5th if not before.  The Chesapeake Bay charter fleet is doing well and those fish just spawned and are heading our way too.  There is also bass and blues reported to be headed North off of Jersey and Raritan Bay N.Y.   We still have some openings for May, textbook perfect conditions for our spring run!
